Creating a high-quality character on Poly doesn’t have to be time-consuming. Follow these quick steps to get started!
Create Avatar
Your character’s avatar is their visual representation and the first impression they make on users. Creating an eye-catching avatar can be done through AI generation or direct image upload.
AI Generation
Upload a Reference Image (Optional): While not mandatory, uploading a reference image helps the AI understand your character’s look better.
Write the Character Description: Provide a detailed description of your character’s appearance, including physical features, clothing, accessories, and context.
No inspiration? Click “optimize” and Poly will generate a random image prompt with one click. You can freely modify it as you wish.
Choose Up to 3 Styles: Select from Poly’s 18 available image styles. The AI will generate images based on your choices.
Select and Review: Choose from the generated avatars. If unsatisfied, you can upload your own image.
AI generated avatar will gain more exposure on Poly. We highly recommend you to try it out!
Direct Image Upload
Select and Upload the Image: Choose a high-quality image that represents your character well.
Crop the Image: Adjust the image to fit different needs like profile photos or chat backgrounds.
The images you upload will be run through moderation filters, make sure the images don’t violate our guidelines to avoid failure setting.
Character Profile
The character profile provides essential information and context, shaping how users interact with your character.
Name (Must)
The character’s name, which is crucial for recognition and interaction. Ensure it’s unique and relevant to the character.
Gender (Must)
Specify the character’s gender identity.
Intro (Must)
Create a compelling introduction that highlights the character’s identity or personality. it should emphasize unique traits and create intrigue.
e.g. This intro highlights the character’s casual, rebellious demeanor and confident personality. It creates intrigue and engages the user by setting up a direct interaction in a relatable scenario.
Greeting (Must)
The first sentence users will see from your character, setting the tone for the interaction. A good greeting will reflect character's personality and set the scene.
e.g. This greeting effectively sets the tone for the interaction by reflecting the character’s restless and curious personality. The scene is vividly described, immersing the user in the dimly lit common room. His hesitant approach and the surprise interaction create an engaging and dynamic start, establishing both the character and the setting.
Permission (Must)
This setting defines who will be able to talk to your character.
Public: The character will be visible on Home and in search results.
Private: No one else will be able to talk with the character.
Tag (Optional)
Choose up to 5 tags to categorize your character for easier discovery.
Background (Optional)
Provide detailed background information to make your character more realistic. This will include family status, significant events, hobbies, weaknesses, beliefs and many more like this example:
Kara, a skilled archer, lost her family in a raid, fueling her desire for justice. She values honor and loyalty, enjoys painting, and aims to protect her village.
This background adds depth, complexity, and clear motivations, making the character relatable and realistic.
Dialogue Style (Optional)
Define your character’s language style, dialogue tone, and common phrases.
Character Voice
A distinct voice enhances your character’s presence and engagement. Choose from the voice library or customize your own.

Choose a voice that matches your character’s persona from Poly’s extensive library.
Customize Your Own Voice
Select and Blend Tones: Choose up to 5 different tones from the library to blend together.
Adjust the Ratio: Fine-tune the ratio of each tone to match the character’s age, personality, and context.
